May the force be with them – as long as they both shall live

Recently, it was announced that George Lucas, best known for creating the Star Wars franchise, is engaged to be married. It will be the second marriage for 68-year-old Lucas and the first for his fiance, 43-year-old Mellody Hobson. Hobson, an investment firm president, also serves as chair of DreamWorks Animation.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that this will not be a Star Wars-themed wedding. That isn’t to say there shouldn’t be some nod to the original movie (we just called it “Star Wars” in 1977 when it was released; now, it is “The New Hope, Vol. 4) that is second only to “Gone With The Wind” in terms of domestic tickets sold.

One great way way acknowledge the franchise might be with cake. A couple of years ago, Mashable presented designs for 15 different Star Wars-themed  wedding and groom’s cakes. Check them out. None of these really strike my fancy, and some are downright creepy – although I probably could stomach the one designed to look like the Millenium Falcon.

But seeing these cakes reminded me of my coolest personal Star Wars encounter. It happened in Santa Fe, New Mexico, of all places.  To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars movie, the U.S. Postal service decorated 400 mailboxes in the style of R2D2. I was lucky enough to encounter one in Santa Fe, as you can see.

Alas, by the time we made a return visit to Santa Fe in 2011, the mailbox had been returned to its original paint job. It didn’t last. Let’s hope that George and Mellody have more staying power.

Congratulations to the groom and best wishes to the bride – may the force be with them and their marriage!
